Don Quixote

I am an admitted ballet aficionado. I spend an ungodly amount of hours on YouTube watching videos of my favourite dancers' performances, interviews, and masterclasses. As for myself, I have long since given up the dream of being a professional dancer (Ballet companies don't usually go for the short muscular girls who haven't been doing ballet for forever).

So, when I got wind of the fact that Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev would be dancing their signature roles in Don Quixote, naturally I grabbed tickets. I am simply in love with their dynamic (they're married!) and their energy. Although the lines and the technique of the pair are distinctly lacking, they more than make up for it in energy, the height of their jumps, and how obviously they love what they're doing. They are surely among the best in the world, and I really, truly adore them.

Pictures got herehere, and here

Here's a video, not of the ABT performance, but one that really shows what they're good at:

Miles of Texas

Today being the first day back from our extended memorial day weekend, I decided to go the comfortable rout. Goodness knows overalls are comfortable!
Even if they're not the most flattering piece of clothing I own, I love them to death. They're extremely soft and just the right amount of baggy. When I'm wearing them, I feel a bit more connected than usual to my Southern roots, and that's a warm kind of feeling. Not really nostalgic, but more like, "yes, I'm from here. I like it. I'm wearing overalls to prove it." I can't really explain it, but I enjoy that feeling a lot. It makes the day a good one.

Long Weekend

I've got a 5 day weekend this week, which is fantastic- I'm planning on finishing my research paper and just RELAXING. I could really, really use the sleep! Also fencing is closed for three of those days, so I get to rest my exercising, too. All this is good, because I've been feeling so worn-out lately.

Musings on Fourth Quarter

Ah, it's that time of year again when people's stringy, unexercised, unshaven legs begin to emerge from under their jeans! It's quite a sight, and some people who haven't done their summer shopping like myself  haven't quite found shorts that fit them properly.
So really it's quite horrific. However, we're all lazy together, and it breeds quite a nice feeling of solidarity, despite the wet sandbox mixed with BO smell that perpetually permeates the hallways and the general grouchiness. We're all grouchy together, you see. We have 5 whole days off for memorial day, and it's so close to summer break that everyone's on edge. Gearing up for final exams doesn't help, along with the fact that by district regulation the air conditioning is off until June first. Phew! Anyway I was just kind of thinking today about how even though we're all miserable we're all miserable together, and it's kind of nice.

Biology

It's finally getting warm again- 81 degrees and super humid! Tomorrow we're taking the state administered biology test, which should be fun. I mean, it's really long, but I don't have to be at school until 815, which is a whole hour later than usual (this means I get to get up a whole hour later than usual)! Also, the test should be pretty easy, because it's given to all biology students across the state, and they don't want to make us look bad.
So I'm not stressed.

What are y'all's experiences with state testing? Good? Bad? Apathetic? I'm always finished early and sleep the rest of the time. It's nice.

Anyway, here's what I wore today to combat the heat:

No Party Like a Gatsby Party

Reading the Great Gatsby has really put me in a 1920's mood- so when I discovered this adorable little dress naturally I was compelled to get it! It's two layers of chiffon, with knife pleats from just under the bust line so it's not bulky at all, which is good. I love the little stars, and there's thread in it that sparkles so it's not all overwhelmingly black. The keyhole neckline is very deep, but when you button the top button it's barely noticeable  which is nice because then the gap's a bit of a surprise. The dress isn't see through at all, which is fantastic, and it spins so nicely!

"There's no party like a Gatsby party... It's not over until at least two people are dead and everyone is disillusioned with the Jazz age as a whole." --A T shirt I saw once.

Punk: Chaos to Couture

I didn't not enjoy the Punk: Chaos to Couture exhibit at the Met Costume Institute. It had a lot of hype for such a small space, however. The clothes themselves were fairly interesting (when they could even be called clothes), but the lighting was extremely dark save for huge video screens playing loops of infamous rock concerts. This, naturally, made it very difficult to actually see what one was supposed to be looking at. Also, there was a lot of white noise sounding background music covered with muted layers of indecipherable audio clips and punctuated by long, loud, ear shattering beeps that seemed to be coming from a metal detector. The issue- there were not metal detectors, and the beeping was part of the sound track. Some parts of the exhibit did seem incongruous to those of us born post 1975, such as the graphitized CBGB bathroom in the entryway. Despite this, I enjoyed a great deal of the clothing, and what really made it worthwhile to me was the giant fluffy wigs that each of the mannequins wore- it was a fun element that lightened up a much too serious view of Punk. In reality, this theme is really overdone. Anyway, you should go if you like punk- the main audience of this showing is really those who are devotees of the style itself.

On another note, we saw James Franco, which made the whole week for me.

These pictures really don't do justice to the bad lighting. I guess photographers are good at that. In person it was MUCH more dark.

Sticking Power

It's interesting how one silhouette or piece of clothing can stick with us throughout our lives. For me, those two things are Dior's New Look and the trench coat. I've always been in love with the whole 50's shape, from bathing suits to movie stars to, of course, the poodle skirt. It shows up in a lot of my clothing choices, and I pick full skirts and crisp shirts pretty much subconsciously.

Trench coats to me have always been a symbol of sophistication. Inspired by the dapper gentlemen in the 30s with their mysterious looking bowler hats and the iconic Parisian lady in her striped boater shirt and silk scarf, I am constantly on the hunt for that one coat. So far, I haven't found it. However, I've gotten pretty close with this particular trench. Though not really suited for very cold or wet weather, it's beautiful and just the right weight for springtime.

Cinched at the Waist

I really, really adore corsets, but because they are not generally accepted to wear around, I settled for this amazing pleather belt!

Also, I deeply apologise for the gross background- a family member went on a cleaning spree and confined us to our rooms until she got there. We weren't allowed to help... So yeah. Do y'all's families ever do anything like that?

Find Your Niche

Find Your Niche
Alternative fashion is growing in popularity.

While most people swoon and obsess over Chanel and Louis Vuitton, a growing segment of the population waits impatiently to get that one exclusive dress from brands like Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Alice and the Pirates, and Clockwork Couture. These are labels that cater to very specific aesthetics that are more like lifestyles than anything else. The market for this type of fashion is growing at an exponential rate but remains dominated by a few select designers that charge exorbitant prices for their clothing.

When first hearing the word “Lolita”, most people think of the famous Nabokov novel. In reference to fashion, however, it means not a promiscuous young girl, but instead a Japanese street style whose mantra is that one must dress sweetly, modestly, and have lots of ruffles. It is influenced by Victorian and Rococo ideals and styles and has a distinct silhouette: a knee-length skirt in a bell or A-line shape held out from the body with petticoats.

However, Lolita is just an umbrella term. As in most of these niche fashions, there are sub-groups such as “sweet Lolita” “gothic Lolita” “classic Lolita”, and so on. Even the sub-groups have sub-groups. Each of the smaller groups has its own style within the style- for example classic Lolita still has the basic shape and values as sweet Lolita, but it is more elegant and is quite staunchly Victorian.

The kind of commitment it takes to wear Lolita is huge. Because a dress can cost anything from $90-1,000, it is a very expensive hobby. As well as gaining a wardrobe of such dresses, skirts, blouses, coats, and so on, one must also acquire petticoats, bloomers, socks, shoes, and accessories that match your clothing pieces to create coordinates, which is the popular term for a complete outfit. On top of all this, brands are overwhelmingly located in Japan. Therefore,  one must translate the page from Japanese, convert yen to dollars, and then pay shipping rates and customs upwards of $30 extra. The reason prices are so high is that each brand only releases a limited amount of each piece in a small collection, with very high quality. Frequently, the piece is custom made specifically to one’s measurements. Also, there are only a few designers who cater to this type of fashion, so they may charge as much as they want because there is no other place to go.

What about buying second hand? Prices do not decrease much. Due to the limited nature of the clothing, the cost may only go down a few dollars. Still, many Lolitas buy second hand to get pieces that are not made anymore, and to lower shipping to a reasonable amount.

However, Victoria Suzanne of Parfait Doll says regarding the commitment, “I think primarily through photo shoots, magazines, the Internet, or media in general, we’ve made the ‘Lolita lifestyle’ into such a large, heavy topic or production, something akin to religion or devoting yourself to a cloister. But it’s not that at all – it’s a much more innocent thing, and a personal thing. It comes naturally, but it’s still a little fairytale inside yourself.”

The problem with such unabatedly high prices is that it leads to the proliferation of scam sites such as Milanoo, who claim to sell Lolita products at an unbelievable discount. In fact, they simply steal other people’s pictures and when you order the product, it is not at all what you expected. Sites such as these can be identified by the fact that they often sell more than just Lolita- they also offer costumes, wedding dresses, and other products along these lines.

Scam sites are not the same as replica sites- replicas are good quality reproductions of pieces made by the main brands, albeit with small variations that set them apart and are generally cheaper. Sadly, replicas are often looked down on in the community, because buying them is seen as being cheap.

Though not mainstream, Lolita and other niche fashions are gaining traction all over the world. Soon, the demand will outstrip the supply of clothing, and it will be hard for the designers to keep up. It would be wise if big names in the fashion industry hopped on the bandwagon- it is a lucrative business and the adherents to this style would most certainly appreciate the lower prices and greater variety that larger companies could offer.

Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend

I'm a sucker for vintage shoes, and when I saw this adorable velvet pair with rhinestones, I had to get them! I  adore the blocky toe and the way it has a piece going diagonally to show off the sparkle. I would consider myself a shoe addict, actually, and own way too many pairs- half of which I don't even wear because I've grown out of them and I can't bring myself to give them away.
