Here in New Jersey, I am trying to make my way through school alive while avoiding the curse of the sweatpants. This is my record of my trials in fashion and my efforts to remain somewhat unaffected by the horrors of public school.

Jock
My friends don't seem to understand that I genuinely enjoy exercising.
I don't really think this is strange at all? I guess it is, though. I just really have this drive to get better at things and constantly self-improve. Not just with exercising, either. I like improving all aspects of life. I don't know, I guess maybe physical activity has been turned into such a chore that people feel like they can't enjoy it.
It releases endorphins, you know! And when I'm done I feel like I've accomplished something, and I feel a lot more energetic than I did previously. Even just going for a walk can really lift one's mood. I know it feels horrible while its happening, but its scientific fact that working out makes everyone feel better. Really!
Also its very satisfying for me to push myself to the limit, and then do it again and again until that first limit isn't a limit anymore. For example: two months ago it was really hard for me to run more than a mile at a time at a decent pace. My knees would hurt and I would be going very slowly towards the end there- now it doesn't really feel like anything at all! It feels good just to know that I'm able to now, when I couldn't before. I like the feeling of getting stronger and better and faster- and I think everyone else probably does, too (though I wouldn't have started running at all if it weren't for the quickly approaching fencing season.).
Anyway I guess the point here is that maybe exercising isn't your thing, but don't feel like you have to hate it. It doesn't matter how much you do, because it really can make you feel better and happier and more productive.

Concept Art is Bad
There is a fine line between good modern art and bad modern art. In my experience, the bad modern art greatly outnumbers the good- and the bad is usually abstract.
To me, anyone can do an abstraction. It does not take a lot of skill. I feel as though if you are going to be doing abstract art, you've first got to kind of prove yourself by doing harder representational things- and the abstraction should add to the concept of the art. What makes an abstract chair a better chair than a photorealistic one?
Speaking of conceptual art, I generally find all of this to be utter rubbish. There are exceptions- like this guy who made a giant human digestive system into a factory machine (a functional human digestive system). However, if I have to read a plaque to get the "joke" or the "point" then it doesn't feel like visual art to me, and shouldn't be in a visual art museum. I go to a museum to see aesthetically pleasing things that engage my attention. See being the key word there. This sort of art seems to be kind of a one-off thing, with no real skill involved and no visual interest. I could spend days looking at Van Gogh, but not days contemplating Yoko Ono's work.
I mean, I could very easily do something like put a white piece of paper in a room, write a plaque about how it represents the human struggle for meaning, and then make a million dollars. That's what much of modern art is, now, and I don't like it at all.

Fancy Dancy
We're slowly getting back in the swing of things as summer ends...
I've been doing ballet classes recently, and I highly recommend it for anyone who can find them! I know it can be really difficult if you're over the age of about six, but once I put in some time I found this lovely recreational class and it's absolutely amazing! Ballet works ALL of your muscles, and stretches them out, leaving you very much tired after a class even when it hasn't seemed to be that much work. It's a lot better for your body than pounding the pavement or the treadmill and ruining your knees! Another plus is that you get to do pretty dancing and listen to pretty music. Really, the only problem is finding a suitable class for your skill level and age group. A warning: make sure not to do balletic moves alone and without having had proper instruction! You could seriously injure yourself!
Anyway, it's a great workout.

A Friendly Desert Community

I have been listening lately to this great podcast called "Welcome to Night Vale". It's posing as a community radio news service from a small desert community. To these citizens, the strange goings- on are nothing to be remarked on, and they simply carry on with their lives through the crisis of the Glow Cloud, the institution of a summer reading program at the library, and the uncertainty of staring into the void of space.
All of this is narrated by Cecil Baldwin, whose voice is by turns lovely and soothing and incredibly creepy (Cecil Baldwin, actually, is the name of both the character and the actor who plays him). The podcast is hilarious, most of the time, but if you listen to it at night, alone, it can be rather frightening!
I can't really do it justice here, for it is rather indescribable.
Even better- It's totally free! I suggest you download just the first episode and see how you like it. I think its a brilliant idea, and I love it to pieces.
Here is the link to listen to it online!
Remember, do not go near the dog park.
Planning Ahead
One thing which I don't entirely understand is how far ahead that fashion companies must design. All of the different collections and shows and fashion weeks must be incredibly taxing. Also, it ends up that you can never buy clothes in the right season! Society demands all of these things to be newer and faster and more innovative- which is why we get a fashion week in September 2013 for Spring 2014. Shouldn't we now be seeing winter clothes? Who actually wears resort? I think it would be a lot less hard on the environment, the designers, and the consumer's wallet if everyone just tried to cool off and let the collections be in stores for more than a week at a time.

Breakdown
Today was the first day of school, and if I were to say that it's going to be easy, I would be lying. It was super easy last year, so I was determined to have a challenge this go-round, and I got it. Well. I have a sinking feeling like I've got way too much on my plate. I guess it's either all or nothing, though! I'm anticipating some sort of burnout or mental breakdown this year.
Well.
This should be interesting!
